Background Information
We are an island, a rock in the stream, we are a people as proud as there's been; in soft summer breeze or in wild winter winds, the home of our hearts, Cape Breton (Kenzie MacNeil).
'S e Ceap Breatunn tir mo ghraidh, tir nan craobh 's nam beanntan ard; 's e Ceap Breatunn tir mo ghraidh, tir a's aillidh leinn air thalamh.
Cape Breton is the land of my love, the land of trees and mountains high; Cape Breton is the land of my love, the loveliest land on earth in our opinion (Dan Alec MacDonald).
These song verses sum up our pride and give some reasons why we choose to live in one of the planet's supreme scenic locations- the Cape Breton Highlands. Rich in culture and tradition, we are at the heart of one of the world's most beautiful unspoiled islands.
The people of this area consider themselves to be guardians of something very special. Renowned explorer John Cabot's arrival on our northern shores represented the coming together of European civilization and Native American culture. Notable groups like the Scots, French, Acadian, Irish and English have called Cape Breton Island home ever since. Despite some turbulent times, harmony prevailed leaving in its wake a unique cultural mosaic of traditions that exists today in song, verse and in how we live our daily lives.
I have traveled the globe. I have seen the Canadian and American Rockies, the Andes and the Alps and the highlands of Scotland, but for simple beauty, Cape Breton outrivals them all. - Alexander Graham Bell
The communities of the Northeast Highlands owe a great deal to the fishery, which still represents a major cornerstone of the local economy. For the most part, we are mariners- the area is home to many small fishing villages and traditions that have gone on for centuries. Although a number of species are fished, we rely mainly on lobster and crab.
The region also had an early introduction to tourism with the establishment of Cape Breton Highlands National Park and the Cabot Trail over 65 years ago. In fact, one of our earlier, better-known tourists/residents was famed inventor Alexander Graham Bell. Of Cape Breton Alexander Graham Bell said: "I have traveled the globe. I have seen the Canadian and American Rockies, the Andes and the Alps and the highlands of Scotland, but for simple beauty, Cape Breton outrivals them all."
Over the years this area has developed into one of eastern Canada's premiere vacation spots. There is an abundance of attractions and activities that strike at the very core of what people want to do when they are on vacation. Whether you want to explore the area and seek adventures or find a beautiful place to rest and breathe in the crisp ocean air, the Northeast Highlands has something for everyone. If you wish to stay a week or for the entire summer we are sure you will leave with lots of fond memories and the intention of returning to this beautiful land we all love.
