Business Development
Since it was created, the Chamber's members - who hail from Meat Cove on Cape Breton's northern tip to St. Ann's Bay - have chalked up an impressive list of activities.
Marketing and Promotion
From its inception the NHCC has promoted the area through the media, Internet travel agencies, and ski clubs. It has designed and distributed locator maps and directories, which provide information on the area's services and accommodations. The Chamber also coordinates the area's involvement in the Doers and Dreamers Guide and, with the help of partners, it has undertaken winter marketing campaigns and hosted travel writers and agents.
Training and Education
In partnership with the Ingonish Resource Center, the Chamber has sponsored training sessions including a hospitality course that was enrolled to capacity. Its members and partners also initiated and continue to co-sponsor a scholarship program, which offers $1000 dollars to a deserving Cabot High School student who plans to attend university.
Advocacy
The rural nature of the economy and isolation from the decision-making centers makes it difficult for voices to be heard. The area has serious issues such as the conditions of the highways and the absence of basic services. It is an on-going process to get the attention of decision makers. The Chamber, through its contact with politicians, continues to impress on government the need to revitalize, upgrade and rejuvenate one of the world's premiere scenic drives and this province's tourism icon- the Cabot Trail.
Business Networking
One of the main services the Chamber offers to its members is the chance to come together to meet, do business and discuss important issues. The Chamber frequently invites guest speakers who share their knowledge on a broad range of subjects. It meets regularly, the first Tuesday of each month, at one of its member's locations.
New Business
If you are unable to find something or are thinking about investing in or establishing a new business in the area feel free to contact the Northeast Highlands Chamber of Commerce. Members would be glad to work in support of new ideas and interests. Whether it is facilitation, coordination, supplies or service, NHCC members are able to help.
