Things to Do

We have very distinct seasons with a temperate climate in summer - long days and beautiful beaches, a picturesque and often warm "Indian Summer" in autumn, and plenty of snow to play in during the winter. Spring brings the migration of many species of birds and whales, and moose can often be seen munching on the sides of the road. The air is fresh and you can see the Milky Way on just about any given night.

The Northeast Highlands is an outdoor adventurer's paradise. The drive through the mountains by the sea is an adventure by itself. There are museums, and spectacular scenery along route. The wilderness is accessible so you don't have to walk, bike or drive far to reach a beautiful beach or hiking trail. Since the Highlands are so close to the ocean, there are lots of adventures on the water. Why not try kayaking, fishing, scuba diving or whale watching? Cape Breton Island is one of the best places for bird watching, both on land and the water. The Highlands is also home to one of the best public golf courses in Canada, Highlands Links.

In Winter, The Cape Breton Highlands is a wonderland with lots of snow and many activities including alpine, telemark, and cross-country skiing; snow shoeing; indoor/outdoor skating; ice-fishing and sledding. All of these activities are done in a backdrop of awesome scenery without the crowds.
